Technology Within Our Control
Calmena Energy Services launched Drilling Technologies through the acquisition of Positive Direction Inc. As a result, it will allow Calmena to fast track the growth of the existing proprietary technology and provide a significant step towards further technology developments. Most importantly with ownership of technology, Calmena can better support it’s Directional Drilling business, build superior downhole survey equipment therefore offering the customer improved service and reliability while drilling.
Survey Instrumentation
The group has successfully developed and commercialized a Cyclone™ Survey Instrument (CSI) , capable of delivering inclination, azimuth with tool face. The CSI incorporates MWD quality sensors, can be used to monitor well bore verticality and should a well bore correction be necessary, the electronics can be reprogrammed with the addition of tool face data.
Patented Positive Pulse Data
Transmission
Data is transmitted via positive pulse telemetry by a patented (US patent # 7468679, CDN patent # 2629835) non compensated rotary pulser (NCRP). By design the pulser is very reliable when used with more conventional mud systems, but offers a significant improvement over competitor’s pulsers in high LCM applications.
Adaptation
The benefits associated with Drilling Technologies NCRP in both standard and extremely high LCM circulating systems has produced opportunity for adaptation to numerous other downhole electronic packages. Most notable is the commercialized adaptation to convert Negative Pulse or collar mounted non-retrievable systems to Positive Pulse retrievable systems with the NCRP. This provides the asset owner an opportunity to upgrade a small portion of their fleet to gain retrievability and remain competitive. Additionally the top hung NCRP allows a seamless conversion for EM telemetry systems providing improved optimization and asset diversity.
